Nobody wants to move themselves. It is such a hassle and there is so much that can go wrong in the process. But even worse than that is being the guy with the pick up truck. The guy that everyone asks to help them move. The guy who gives up his whole Saturday (or maybe the whole weekend) and gets a couple of slices of pizza in return.

When we talk to DIYers, a lot of them are in the process of moving, and they have a lot of them have too much to do and are a bit on the So the question that I hear asked decently often is, “when does it make sense to hire a moving company, and when is it better to do it yourself?” I usually start by asking them a few questions to help them to make that decision, and they usually come to their own conclusion by the end.

1. Do you have a big family/friend group that would help?

The last thing that you want to do is to try and do this by yourself, or with a small group of people. Moving a refrigerator with 2 or 3 people is not fun. Especially if you don’t have all of the right dollies and ramps to get it into the truck. I have been in on too many small groups moving big items and it is always scary. I’m always worried that someone is going to trip or the item is going to slip out of someone’s hands and either someone or something is going to get hurt. So, if you do not have a big group of people that really like you to help you move, it’s best to hire a mover.

Here’s a funny moving fail video to let you see some of the things that can go wrong in a move!

2. Do you have the budget for it?

This can mean a lot of different things. Having a moving company help can mean full box and un-box service, or it can mean just loading and unloading the boxes. You need to talk to a good moving company in order to figure out what it will actually cost. There is a huge range depending on how far you are moving and how much stuff you have. Make sure to ask around and look for a good company that has excellent reviews and a good reputation. If you are local and looking for a good Orange County moving company, I highly recommend Right Movers in Tustin. They have excellent reviews and you can read here about their customer service.

3. How much do you value your stuff?

Did you see the piano in the video above?!? Really, if you want all of your stuff to get there in one piece (or to be insured if it isn’t), then you should really use a moving company to help you with your move. So, if you have a lot of nice, expensive stuff, it is probably worth it. However, if you have mostly inexpensive things that you don’t really care about (newlyweds!), then a moving service is probably a waste. Unless you are moving out of state, and then often you don’t really have much of a choice!
